Head of Technical Accounting
The Head of Technical Accounting is responsible for leading all significant accounting judgments and technical financial matters across the Group. Reporting to the Group Financial Controller, the role provides authoritative advice on complex accounting issues, supports high-quality external reporting, and ensures compliance with accounting standards in a complex global listed environment. The role partners closely with senior finance leadership, Tax, Legal, and External Audit to support transactions, restructuring, and strategic initiatives, while maintaining robust accounting policies, manuals, and procedures.
- Act as the Group authority on technical accounting matters, providing clear, well-reasoned advice on complex and judgemental issues.
- Lead the assessment and documentation of significant accounting judgments, estimates, and positions across the Group.
- Ensure consistent application of accounting standards and policies across all entities and regions.
- Prepare and review high-quality technical accounting papers for the Audit Committee and other governance forums.
- Support the GFC in Audit Committee discussions on complex accounting matters and significant judgements.
- Ensure transparency, robustness, and clarity of accounting positions communicated to governance bodies.
- Act as the primary technical interface with External Auditors on complex accounting matters.
- Lead technical discussions, resolve issues efficiently, and minimise late adjustments or audit surprises.
- Coordinate technical input from external advisors where required.
- Partner with Tax, Legal, and Corporate Development on restructurings, acquisitions, disposals, and other strategic transactions.
- Assess accounting implications of tax restructurings and complex group structures.
- Ensure accounting outcomes are aligned with commercial intent and regulatory requirements.
- Own and maintain the Group accounting manual, policies, and procedures, ensuring they remain current and fit for purpose.
- Lead implementation of new and revised accounting standards across the Group.
- Provide guidance and training to finance teams on technical accounting matters and policy changes.
- Ensure accounting policies and judgements support strong control environments and meet external reporting and regulatory expectations.
- Support Internal Audit and regulatory reviews on technical accounting matters.
- Identify and proactively manage technical accounting risks across the Group.
- Build and develop technical accounting capability across the Group finance function.
- Act as a trusted advisor to senior finance leaders and a coach to regional and divisional teams.
- Extensive technical accounting experience within a large, complex, listed organisation and/or top-tier professional services firm (required).
- Deep expertise in IFRS (or relevant accounting framework), with a strong track record of advising on complex and judgemental areas (required).
- Significant experience supporting Audit Committees and engaging with External Auditors at a senior level (required).
- Experience supporting restructurings, transactions, and tax-related accounting matters (required).
- Strong professional judgement with the ability to articulate and defend accounting positions clearly (required).
- Gravitas and credibility to operate as the Group authority on technical accounting (required).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, particularly in explaining complex matters clearly to non-technical stakeholders (required).
- Able to influence outcomes while maintaining strong relationships with auditors and advisors (required).
- Highly analytical, detail-oriented, and intellectually rigorous (required).
- Calm and effective under pressure, particularly around reporting deadlines and complex issues (required).
- Commercially aware, with the ability to balance technical compliance with business objectives (required).
- Comfortable working across geographies, cultures, and business functions (required).
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Information Systems, or related field (required).
- Professional finance or systems qualification preferred (e.g., ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or SAP/Oracle certifications) (preferred).
