Operations Support Engineer
The Operations Support Engineer role focuses on supporting, debugging, and improving the functionality and performance of applications and systems running on high availability production environments. - Owning and investigating a wide variety of production issues at both an application and database level.
- Producing robust, well-written solutions for production issues.
- Effectively communicating investigation status to the customer.
- Deploying fixes to production environments.
- Escalating issues to senior team members when appropriate to ensure effective resolution.
- Assist in the creation and maintenance of support documentation, including FAQs, knowledge base articles, and troubleshooting guides.
- Participate in a rota that includes working on weekends and bank holidays.
- A bachelor’s degree in a traditional science subject, ideally computer science, engineering or information systems from a well-regarded university (required).
- 2-3 years of experience in an application support role, with a proven record of technical investigation and creating solutions to problems (required).
- 2-3 years of hands-on experience with at least one major programming language (Java, J2EE, C, C++, Python, PHP, etc.) and SQL queries (required).
- Strong fundamental programming skills (data structures, algorithms) (required).
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills (required).
- Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken (required).
- An ability to learn new technologies quickly, work independently, manage workload and escalate in a timely manner (required).
- Adequate knowledge of any Unix/Linux distributions (e.g. Ubuntu, SUSE, etc.) and bash shell commands (nice-to-have).
- Adequate knowledge of performance monitoring tools (Grafana, Datadog, Squadcast etc.) (nice-to-have).
- Experience with LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) (nice-to-have).
- Adequate knowledge of Web technologies (HTML, HTML5 and CSS) and Internet protocols (XML, HTTP, TCP/IP) (nice-to-have).
- Experience using version control systems (GIT, Subversion, CVS) (nice-to-have).
- Adequate knowledge of scripting languages (e.g. Perl, Python, JavaScript) (nice-to-have).
- Familiarity with the Jira ticketing system (nice-to-have).
